Friday, May 15, 2009 at 6:10PM Bond Girl Gemma Arterton in 'Wuthering Heights'
It has been a while since a film version of Wuthering Heights has made it to
theaters, but the pieces are falling into place for a new version of Emily Emily Brontë's classic novel,
which was nominated for eight Academy Awards in 1940.

Once upon a time, Natalie Portman was in line to play Cathy oppostie Michael Fassbender's Heathcliff, but
both actors are off the project and have been replaced by the other Bond girl from Quantum of
Solace, Gemma Arterton, and Ed Westwick from Gossip Girl. Director Peter Webber (Girl with
the Pearl Earring) will be behind the camera on the new version, which The Hollywood Reporter reports will shoot later this year.
For Arterton, it's another big step for an actress clearly on the rise. She'll turn up in next summer's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and the remake of Clash of the Titans, and if you need a refresher course on what being the young female lead in a Bruckheimer production could mean to an actress' career, I'll cite Keira Knightley, Nicole Kidman, and Kate Beckinsale.
Ecosse Films says the new Wuthering Heights will not take the form of a "stuffy costume drama." Whether or not that means it's a contemporary update is not clear, but director Peter Webber calls the novel "powerful, moving and dangerous love story that cries out to be told on the big screen."
And so it will be.
