Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 11:29AM Box Office - A Slow Start for 'Angels & Demons'
The numbers are not all that encouraging for Angels & Demons, even considering that it really won't have the awesome box office haul of some of the other tentpole movies this summer. It probably won't be enough to give the Da Vinci Code follow-up a $50 million weekend, which has been its measuring stick coming in.

On Friday, Angels & Demons earned $16.5 million according to Box Office Mojo, which is good enough fof the top spot as the third summer weekend starts, but it would be difficult to the film making over $45 million or so in its debut weekend, a huge drop from the numbers put up by Da Vinci Code three years ago.
It's no surprise that Star Trek is in second place on Friday, taking in a little less than $12 million. I still think it has a shot to catch Angels & Demons this weekend, because I'm confident it will make more money today and won't have a big slide tomorrow whereas I don't know if Angels & Demons will grow its audience today or if it's only going to be big on the opening day. In any case, the top two films won't be separated by a ton of money.
They're the only two storylines worth following this weekend; Wolverine might make another $10 - $12 million this weekend, closing in on $150 million overall, but it's done the majority of its damage already. Right now, Monsters vs. Aliens is the top grossing film of the year, nearing $190 million. I wonder how long that will hold.
We'll have the complete weekend rundown tomorrow, charting how much Star Trek can add to its pile in the second weekend.
