Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 11:39AM Box Office - 'Angels' Bedeviled, Earns $48 Million
In 2006, even though The Da Vinci Code made over $200 million in the U.S., the majority of its money came from overseas. This year, that has to be the hope for everyone involved, because it's fairly clear Angels & Demons won't get close to $200 million.

This weekend, it debuted with only $48 million, which is not just $30 million below the hot start for Da Vinci three years ago, but it's just the sixth highest opening of the year. I still believe it will manage to do OK over the next several weeks because this isn't necessarily an opening weekend movie to a lot of its potential ticket buyers, who tend to be outside the coveted younger demographics. That's not much of a consolation for Universal, though, since a $150 million U.S. total seems like the best it could do.
Star Trek had a strong second weekend, which I think everyone expected. The reboot made another $43 million, which is about a 43% drop from the opening weekend. Compare that to Wolverine's 69% tumble and even Iron Man's 48% decline a year ago and you can see evidence of how the strong word of mouth has and will continue to help Trek through a very competitive May.
After ten days (plus the opening night last Thursday), Star Trek has made $147 million, which sets up well for our $200 - $210 haul by the end of May. I think that means a $250 million-plus performance this summer, which should easily put this in the top five and probably the top three for the season.
The Top Five:
1 - Angels & Demons ($48 million)
2 - Star Trek ($43 million)
3 - Wolverine ($14.8 million)
4 - Ghosts of Girlfriends Past ($6.8 million)
5 - Obsessed ($4.5 million)
