Monday, May 18, 2009 at 2:02AM Director Peter Berg, You Sank My Battleship!
First it was Clue, and for a while after that, nothing. But recently, there has been a rash of new board game movies popping up in development. In addition to another version of Clue from Gore Verbinski, we'll get Monopoly from Ridley Scott, effing Candy Land, a flick based on Ouija, and now Battleship.

Peter Berg (Hancock, Friday Night Lights) is in talks to direct the movie based on the Hasbro game for Universal. The Hollywood Reporter writes that Jon and Erich Hoeber of the upcoming and thrice-delayed Whiteout have been hired to write the script. How will they turn the game into a movie? Well...they won't. Not really. Universal and Hasbro are just combining forces to make an "epic naval action adventure." They're just putting the name of the game with a completely different idea.
In case you haven't caught on, all of those games are Hasbro, which owns Parker Bros. and Milton Bradley. Next? Risk and/or Axis and Allies would be cool, Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit are pointless, and that really only leaves The Game of Life. Chutes and Ladders is also out there, as are Twister and Yahtzee. But again, those would be tough to adapt.
Berg has a ton of projects in the hopper at the moment. He has two films lined up before he remakes Dune, and that's a huge undertaking. This also sounds pretty enormous. So, if he is the guy to direct Battleship, it'll be a while, at least two to three years.

Who would have thought that Jumanji was so far ahead of its time!
Clearly, Robin Williams, who got so far behind his own time that he was apparently ahead of it all along.
