MacGruber to Explode on the Big Screen?
Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 11:09AM
What would a MacGruber movie look like? Lorne Michaels tells The Hollywood
Reporter that he and his Saturday Night Live team are still exploring a way to turn the Will
Forte sketch into a film.

MacGruber is a funny idea, like a lot of SNL sketches over the past 35 years, but can you
possibly see a 90-minute version of what is essentially the same 60-second sketch every week? That's the
question that has always plagued SNL movies, and most of them fail to build a good, funny story
around a pretty limited character.
It does seem that, rather than addressing a demand for a MacGruber movie, Michaels might be
thinking that there just needs to be another SNL spin-off. In theory, this could be an 80s-inspired
action comedy that features MacGruber on several missions that always end the same, until he inadvertently
saves the day.
I certainly like the skit in its current form, and it has more upside than Night at the Roxbury. One of the happy accidents in all of this is that there's no concrete backstory for MacGruber yet, so the writers can pretty much do whatever they want leading up to the explosions. Let's just hope the whatever they want is what we want.
