Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 1:16AM 'Indy'-fied Harry Houdini Movie Hires 'Indy' Writer
Much like Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, in which the iconic detective appears to be putting the dick in private dick, legendary magician Harry Houdini will get a brand new sheen courtesy of Hollywood.

Summit Entertainment (the folks making all that Twilight money) recently picked up the rights to the biography, The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero, which the studio will completely discard in favor of making an action movie.
Huh?
Yeah, instead of a straight bio-pic or even one that veers away from some of the facts of the story, Summit just wants to turn Houdini into "part Indiana Jones and part Sherlock Holmes." To make the transition from real Houdini to archetypal swaggering hero, Summit has reportedly hired Jeff Nathanson to write Houdini, according to IGN.
Nathanson most recently shared story credit with George Lucas for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Bernard, but he's written scripts for The Terminal, Catch Me If You Can, and Rush Hour and Speed sequels.
I'll ask the question I always throw out there when a film moves so far away from the source material that everyone involved might be better off making an entirely different movie: Why even stick with Houdini? Invent your own superhero if that's what you want.
The Secret Life of Houdini is due out in 2011.
