'Terminator Salvation' Makes $3 Million at Midnight
Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 2:42PM
In its midnight showings, Terminator Salvation made about $3 million, according to the earliest estimates, published by Variety. That's a hard number to gauge, because Warner Bros. hasn't detailed exactly how many houses ran the movie this morning.

But we know this: Watchmen earned $4.6 million in midnight shows and it's difficult to imagine that Watchmen was in significantly more theaters at midnight than Terminator. Wolverine earned $5 million in just under 1,600 showings on May 1st.
Terminator will expand to its full complement of 3,630 theaters tomorrow, which as we mentioned in our box office forecast, is about 400 fewer theaters than Night at the Museum, and that's the key number when trying to predict the overall weekend totals.
I do feel that the $3 million in midnight shows is nothing terribly special. We'll have a better feel when the opening day receipts are counted. I've got about a $13 - $14 million projection for today, and it seems like that's about right based on this evidence. I doubt it would be anywhere near $20 million.

I'm thinking that perhaps with the holiday weekend not as many people felt they needed to see Salvation @ midnight. They have an extended weekend to see whatever the want. Personally, I plan on seeing Star Trek and Salvation this weekend. Plus some NBA Playoffs...
