Friday, May 22, 2009 at 9:12PM Producers Beginning Work on Bond 23
Even though it wasn't as good as Casino Royale (but how could it be?), I was surprised by how quickly Quantum of Solace faded into obscurity. You know that thing we always say about the opening weekend being worth about one-third of the total box office? Well, the latest Bond movie opened with $67 million and only made another $100 million after that, which is hardly encouraging.

But producers of the longest running franchise are back at it, apparently, meaning we could be headed for a November 2010 release to keep 007's schedule on track. Producer Michael G. Wilson told The Sun (via Commander Bond) that, “We have started work on the new film, which I can’t say anything about. Daniel Craig is very keen to get going.”
We do know that the Broccoli contingent has decided not to go with the novel Devil May Care, commissioned for Ian Fleming's centennial. And it should not surprise you that they want to get back to the drawing board. After all, with Bourne extending its run, Angelina Jolie embarking on a possible franchise with her spy thrilla Salt, and with a ton of other Robert Ludlum books heading into production, Bond is facing more competition than ever before.
The flip side of this is if you rush it, you might get a movie that disappoints fans the way Quantum of Solace seemed to. Might as well get it right this time.
Wilson also said he'd like to give Duffy and Amy Winehouse a shot to sing the theme for Bond 23, which was an entirely forgettable facet of the last production. Not sure I want the Wino involved, but Duffy's got a voice that would fit those classic Bond belters.

I've said this a million times, both films could have been so much better had they just cut the last 25 minutes of the first and put it at the beginning of the second. The first suffers from too much story during the never ending ending and the second suffers from too little story and a checklist of chase scenes involving every type of transportation, by land, by sea and by air. Hopefully the third doesn't get even worse than the second cause that would put it in the awful category and Casino Royale showed so much promise for about an hour and a half. Plus I hear Criag has said that he wants to bring back the martini drinking, fun loving, swinger from the classic Bond films... not really promising, in my opinion anyway. If I wanted that Bond I'd watch Sean Connerys films.
It was surprising that Quantum of Solace was such a turkey, when Casino Royale was so good.
I think that they have taken the angry, murderous Bond as far as they can. A third film with this nihilistic misanthrope would be even more unbearable than Quantum.
To achive a better and more human Bond, they should take Paul Haggis off the writing team. He's such a crypto-fascist.
I really liked Quantum of Solace. Was it as good as Casino Royale? No, but I wasn't let down by it at all. It is still in my top five Bonds. (Casino Royale, From Russia with Love, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and Goldeneye would be the other four if anyone cares)
Plus after seeing Quantum I have decided that if Catwoman ever shows up in the Batman franchise again, there is a perfect choice in Olga Kurylenko.
I think Olga would make an ideal anything.
"Casino Royal" was one of the best Bond films. In my opinion, Craig is the best Bond yet; I like Craig's highly energetic chase scenes - Give me more!! Despite its flaws, I liked "Quantum" also. It wasn't as good as C.R. but that is a very high threshold. I'll go to see as many Bond films as Daniel Craig makes.
