Michael Haneke's 'White Ribbon' Wins Palme D'Or

It was not one of the more publicized entries that won the Palm D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival today, but rather director Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon. Haneke, who is probably best known to American audiences for last year's remake of his own Funny Games, has been nominated for four Golden Palms before, and has won five other awards at Cannes in other categories.

Jaqcues Audiard's A Prophet won the Grand Jury Prize, and Christoph Waltz won Best Acor for Inglourious Basterds. Charlotte Gainsbourg of Lars von Trier's controversial Antichrist won Best Actress and Brillante Mendoza won Best Director for Kinatay.

Haneke's film is set in a small German town prior to World War I, and explores a strange set of circumstances and tragedies that happen there. He was awarded the Palme D'Or by legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert, this year's jury president and the star of Haneke's 2001 Cannes winner La Pianeste.

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up distribution rights for The White Ribbon in the U.S. The company also acquired rights to last year's winner, The Class, which was also nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE COLIN!

Best actress went to Charlotte Gainsbourg for Anti Christ
Best Actor went to Christoph Waltz for Inglorious Basterds

This tells me a few things... Like for one, Anti Christ might have some potential...I initially viewed the trailer and such and the reaction by critics from Cannes as the film being very far out there and up and down as in who actually liked it or thought it was any good...

Christoph Waltz was a big win for Inglorious Basterds the film in general. It might make no difference here in the states but overseas this could be huge financial gains for the film... Tarantino said at Cannes (I know b/c I saw it) that if he didnt find the actor for the character Hans Luda the film would not work and HE WOULDVE SCRAPPED THE WHOLE FILM!

Thats pretty amazing... I will pay closer attention to his performance now when I do see the film.

Yeah great stuff, nice post Colin
