Monday, May 25, 2009 at 7:55AM Is Martin Short In the 'Arrested Development' Movie?
I'm not completely in love with this little item of news, if only because I think the Arrested Development movie should be squarely positioned as a sort of greatest hits collection. Martin Short told Australia's The Morning Show (via Dark Horizons) that he's getting ready to reprise his role as Uncle Jack from the lauded series as one of his many upcoming projects.

I probably like Martin Short more than the next guy. I ask you, how can you not dig a guy who, for his Jiminy Glick character, asks Mel Brooks, "So, what's your beef with the Nazis?" But Uncle Jack, as funny as he was, only appeared in one episode of the show. My feeling is that any minute he gets takes one minute away from Tobias or GOB or George-Michael. And I don't really want that.
Who knows if he's actually in the movie or if he's just been asked by creator Mitch Hurwitz if he'd be interested, just so Hurwitz can line up all possible options as he's writing the script. Or maybe he literally has two lines and it's no big deal. But damn it, I want this movie to be as good as the show, and I don't think it can get there devoting a lot of time to really minor characters.
In other news, Short also said he's prepping his own directorial debut, bringing his own script Off Your Meds to the big screen. It's about a thrice-divorced man who is still in love with his much older first wife.

As long as an Arrested Development movie gets made, and all the main people are in it, I don't care who else is in it. Plus he may have only been in one episode, but he was pretty damn funny in that one episode.
He was great in that episode, but I think the focus should be on the main characters; I was surprised Short mentioned it.
