The First Five Minutes of 'Blood: The Last Vampire'

Star Wars notwithstanding, I hate scrolls. I understand in that case why it's done, because we're literally picking up in the middle of the story, and it's kind of an homage to the serials of the '30s and '40s, but I just think it's a cheap way to avoid actually telling the story.

When the technique is artfully done - as in the new Rian Johnson film, The Brothers Bloom - a prologue can be terrifc. But when you just say, "Here's what happened so far" in three paragraphs, it's just lazy. Narration isn't much better.

Outside of the crawl that kicks off Blood: The Last Vampire, I'm OK with the first five minutes. It looks seemy and raw, almost cheap, but I don't mind it. The scene happens in a subway, and those places are the urban equivalent of lint traps. Oh, one more thing: Dubbed dialogue only works in martial arts movies, so it's a good thing there's swordplay in this scene.

Blood: The Last Vampire, based on the animated film of the same name, will be in theaters this July.

Not a perfect recreation of the animation, but close enough to knwo for sure what you are watching. I do agree the scroll text does not work.
