Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 5:25PM Whacked-Out Nic Cage in the 'Bad Lieutenant' Trailer
It's not a remake of Bad Lieutenant, and the new trailer for Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans makes it seem like the title of the films are about the only things these two movies have in common.

The original, directed by Abel Ferrara, was a very rough NC-17 film that helped usher in a grittier kind of indie cinema in the 1990s. The new one just looks like a bizarre drugged-up cop movie that tries too hard to be funny. Nic Cage is the drugged-up cop, and he appears to be at his most Cagey. That's not really a compliment.
On the plus side, we'll be able to introduce "His soul is still dancing" to the pop culture lexicon thanks to this movie:
There's no U.S. release date yet for Bad Lieutenant, and I'm not so sure this trailer will speed up that process.

It doesn't seem like this is a werner herzog film. I love werner herzog with all my heart. Aguirre, The Wrath of God, Stroszeck, Fitzcarraldo, and basically all his documentaries i've seen I l love. He is one of the most original and best film-makers of all time and this seems kind of like it could hit or miss. I don't see any of his great artistry or craft in here at all. Hopefully it is somewhat different then the trailer and it herzog brings his documentary feel too it.
The first film was so gritty and dark, but it was also stripped down of all the baggage that most other crime/ cop movies have. It was such a cold and tough movie too sit through, but so worth it and this just seems like another movie. Why would herzog re-make that, and into this none the less. I liked the idea at first just because I thought it was a great idea too bring that kind of character and story into new orleans after Katrina.
It reminds me of Zandalee, the New Orleans-based Nic Cage movie from about 1990 that may or may not have been released theatrically. Not a great movie to be compared to.
Do we really need Nic Cage to play an addict again. I hope this performance doesn't get as over-rated as the last one.
I'm not sure that could be possible.
Thank you. a fellow hater of Leaving Las Vegas. That movie was so over rated
I say it looks entertaining. Outside the name it obviously has noting to do with the original. It seems like Herzog is going the comedy route, and that's fine and unique. I would have preferred Kilmer in the lead though.
Hey Colin, have you seen the original film that this is supposedly "inspired by"? I just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and really enjoyed myself- it's all over the place, but Keitel's acting holds the whole film together.
This bears no resemblance to that film, and i'm kinda glad, because it looks over-the-top and possibly crazy, and that's totally what I expect from a Nicolas Cage "dirty cop" movie.
But please tell Herzog to change the title, will ya? "Bad Lieutenent: Port of Call New Orleans"- adding another colon would actually make the title flow WORSE than it already does.
Looks OK not sold yet however...
Doesnt look terrible I still like to have hope in Nic Cage...
Eva Mendes looks hot
