Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 4:17PM Trailer - Francis Ford Coppola's 'Tetro'
You know those commercials that spoof art films by shooting everything in black and white and showing weird cafe scenes and crying clowns? That's exactly what the trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro reminds me of: A spoof of an art film.

His last movie, Youth Without Youth, was a weird exercise with Tim Roth and Alexandra Maria Lara, but it was gorgeously photographed, so the black and white cinematography in Tetro has my attention. Everything else, though? I dunno.
Watch it and see if you don't think it's trying to be weird for the sake of being weird. I'm of the mind that taking that approach almost never works.
Coppola's latest will be in limited release this June.

Yeah I agree he is being weird for the sake of being weird. But i think the visual is amazing and there is a plot, no matter how weird it is.
I do believe there could be something special here and possibly a sleeper if promoted and marketed right.
Francis Ford Coppola is a genius and has "fallen off" from decades ago when it seemed he ruled the world in directing.
I have lost a lot of respect for him because of his comments about Al Pacino, De Niro, and Jack Nicholson. That really turned me off from him and just goes to show what kind of MAN he is rather than directer. Probably jealousy that he has fallen and others have gained.
I dont know if I'am willing to spend money to see this but its possible, it does look interesting.
dude, you have been down on this film since day one, i think you have no hope in a coppola comeback. I'm not saying that this looks like the best film ever made, but I'm excited too see it, and I think it's going too at least be pretty good. Look he's lost his edge, and has not made a great film since Apocalypse or a good film since Cotton Club, but there was too much talent there from before too be this down on him
You make a point Zack.
Yeah there is talent but definitly no comeback will happen for Coppola if he's hoping for one.
It will be interesting. But somehow I'd like to see what the critics say before I venture out to go see this when it comes out.
I really wonder what the critics will think.....
Zack -
Have I been down on Tetro before? I don't think I've even mentioned it until today, so I'm not sure how that's possible. Anyway, all I'm saying is the trailer's weird, perhaps intentionally and needlessly so.
The cinematography looks fantastic, something it shares with Youth Without Youth, but it's still a storytelling medium. If what you're showing me only looks good but is entirely self-indulgent in every other way, that's a problem.
actually it was when you were talking about the films you were most anticipating for this year, and I mentioned tetro and you said that you would not trust coppola too make a good movie any more.
Actually he did not say that he had not trust in Coppola that he cannot make a good movie anymore. He simply said, that he hasn't made a good one in while. He also said that it does not sound like mass appeal, which is not bad either. I actually think his remark about Tetro was a hopeful one. I know that I am hopeful.
