Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 5:20AM Woody Allen Finds His New Nicole Kidman
I was a bit surprised when Nicole Kidman bid farewell to the new Woody Allen movie, which begins filming this July in London. And if I was surprised, imagine how Woody felt. Kidman shouldn't be turning down respectable roles at this point, because her career could really use some help. However, in this case, it could be a case of Kidman having two good roles, choosing instead to work on The Rabbit Hole with director John Cameron Mitchell, which she is also producing.

Woody didn't wait long to find a suitable replacement, hiring British actress Lucy Punch to fill Kidman's shoes. As always, we don't know the plot of Allen's upcoming film, but Variety says that Punch will play "high-priced call girl similar to Ashley Dupre, who was at the center of the scandal that brought down New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer."
Punch has appeared in Hot Fuzz and the CBS sitcom, The Class, which didn't last very long. There's no question that this is her biggest role, especially given that she's replacing an Oscar winner in the role. She joins Allen's best cast: Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Naomi Watts, and Freida Pinto.
It bears pointing out that Allen has already had one cinematic street walker pick up an Academy Award, with Mira Sorvino winning Best Supporting Actress back in 1996 for The Mighty Aphrodite.
