McConaughey Talks 'Dazed and Confused' Sequel

Which do you think haunts Matthew McConaughey more, the Ghosts of Girlfriends Past or the Ghosts of His Few Good Movies Past? My hunch is it's the latter. After all, he's fairly recently married, and even if he weren't, getting new girlfriends would probably not be a real problem. However, The Shirtless One hasn't been in a good movie since Frailty back in 2002.

So when the subject of a sequel to Dazed and Confused came up recently, McConaughey sounded intrigued. "That’s a very precious subject, that movie,” McConaughey told MTV.

“We made such a gem…I’ve had loose discussions about what would be the next [in]carnation of a Dazed and Confused," added the actor, who so memorably created tail-chasin' stoner David Wooderson in the film. "[Director Richard Linklater is] not going to do it unless it’s done the right way. It’s a good idea, but he’s gotta pick the right way to do it.”

When you stop to think about it, Dazed & Confused had a really good cast for the budget and time. A few lengthy careers have come out of it, with Joey Lauren Adams, Ben Affleck, Adam Goldberg, Cole Hauser, and Parker Posey all landing roles in the film early in their careers. Hell, even Renee Zellweger is in it, albeit in an uncredited role.

Because of that, doing a sequel would be attractive on a few levels, and if handled properly, McConaughey sees real possibilities:

“You’ve gotta bring back certain cast members. I’d love to see what they’re all doing today. I’d love to see what they’re all doing ten years later. David Wooderson may have a few kids. Running a community radio station. I don’t know.”

Hmm...see, this is why we should let Linklater worry about those specifics. It's a cherished film for a lot of people, and sequels are generally frowned upon. By the same token, the movie's reputation has only grown over the past 17 years, so the fact that so many people want a second chapter has to mean something to the people who made the original and might feel like they owe some part of their careers to being involved in it in the first place.

I say it's too early to count this one out.

i go to the same high school that Richard Linklater went to...it hasnt changed. In fact there is a brick engraved "class of '75 still smokin after all these years." I know that is the year before but it proves it all true.
