Audrey Tautou in Chanel No. 5 Short Film

Audrey Tautou is best known for Amélie, and she had a major role in The Da Vinci Code, as well. But she is not exactly a big French export, preferring to work in Europe than in Hollywood.

Even still, her performance this year as Coco Chanel should once again garner her international attention. How could it not, playing one of the most legendary figures in fashion? Today is May 5th, officially Chanel No. 5 Day in New York, and part of Fifth Avenue has been renamed Avenue No. 5 until May 10th.

As part of the Chanelebration, the fragrance has hired Tautou and her Amélie director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, to create a short film, a beautifully photographed postcard to Chanel No. 5:

At the official film site, you can watch a couple different versions of the short, plus some pretty good behind-the-scenes looks, a rarity for a project like this.

Says Tautou of her involvement in the short:

"I always refused to do ads and to be the face of a perfume until now. Because first I wanted to focus on my acting career and I needed a real sincerity in my "yes." I wanted a genuine connection. And I think the combination between Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the Maison Chanel - which has always shown me real kindness - and this exceptional perfume, it made for a cocktail which was pretty delicious."

Check out the film if you have a couple minutes. If you're a fan of cinematography, you're bound to enjoy it. And Tautou's Coco avant Chanel, which is not directed by Jeunet, has already been released in France and other European countries, but no U.S. release date has been announced.
