The Vatican Says 'Angels & Demons' is "Harmless"

I'm sure this will get a sigh of relief from Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, but whatever damage could be done to Angels & Demons may have already been done. But reviewers from the official Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, have said that the film is not inflammatory in any way to the Church, but instead just "harmless" entertainment.

There had been calls for a boycott by some Catholics and groups operating as mouthpieces for the Church, and that may stick with some potential viewers, keeping them away from the Dan Brown adaptation. However, the official party line is two thumbs up.

The movie is being hailed as a "gigantic and smart commercial operation," with L'Osservatore saying readers could have fun finding the many historical inaccuracies in the film. It's "a video game that first of all sparks curiosity and is also, maybe, a bit of fun," writes the the paper.

This is the opposite opinion of the one the Vatican took with The Da Vinci Code, a difference the paper noted. "The theme is always the same in both novels: a sect versus the church, even though the parts of the good and the bad are distributed differently."

"(W)ith Angels & Demons," observes L'Osservatore, the church is on the side of the good guys."
