Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 11:47PM 'Wolverine' Spin-off Confirmed for Deadpool
The other shoe has fallen in the world of Wolverine spin-offs. 20th
Century Fox has made it official: We're getting a Deadpool movie.

Ryan Reynolds will play the lead role (aka Wade Wilson), and if you saw X-Men Origins:
Wolverine, you know that hint was pretty strong already. What will the spin-off entail? Tough
to say at this point, although my hunch is that it will be a prequel to the events of
Wolverine.
For reasons I won't go into in case you haven't checked out the new movie yet, it makes more sense
to use Ryan Reynolds based on the character before his interaction with Wolverine than after. It's
also a closer approximation of the comic book character if you basically ignore Wolverine
and just go with the name recognition and start over.
But honestly, I have no idea what Fox plans to do. You'd think since they just left one origin
story, it would make sense to start at the beginning for this character, too.
The only hesitation I have about it is whether or not audiences will care. Deadpool isn't nearly
the factor in Wolverine that I think a lot of people hoped for, and it's not as if Reynolds
has been printing money with recent box office excursions. I think he needs a star vehicle, and
this would qualify, but as to whether his current Deadpool will build an audience for another
round, that's an incomplete grade, I'm afraid.

Ugh...fox fox fox. They totally butcher the Deadpool character and now their going to give him a movie. HA. If they had planned on doing a solo movie why in the world wouldn't they have introduced the character the way he was meant to be seen? Why even have him in the movie?
Do studio execs at fox have any clue what they're doing? Do they own a brain? So many questions...
If they continue with the Wolverine Origins scenario the movie will no doubt tank.
Wait, sooo I'm confused. Would this be about Wade before he was Deadpool or after he became Deadpool?
Well, that's where it gets tricky. He takes the name Deadpool after he's booted from the Weapon X program. But I don't think you can build empathy for the character if you pick it up where Wolverine leaves off. Also, the Merc with a Mouth kind of needs his mouth, right?
They could do a Godfther II thing... prequel/sequel. Have the events take place both before and after Wolverine Origins (which I have not yet seen). It would take a good writer though to make this work... perhaps team up one of the comic boys (Penn, Tse, Hayer, Gaiman etc.) with another non-comic screenwriter who works well with time (Beaufoy, Roth, McDonagh!!!). McDonagh could certainly provide the mouth for the merc.
Honestly, I think the events prior to Wolverine leaving the group with Wade in it felt very much cut short in the Wolverine movie. I wanted to see more of them taking on crazy drug lords etc. I think the best action sequences were them working together.
