Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 5:49PM Ladies: Larry David on the 'Whatever Works' Poster
Hey, guess what: Larry David stars in the new Woody
Allen movie, Whatever Works. If you
didn't know that already, the new poster is an incredibly subtle reminder.

David plays a curmudgeon named Boris opposite a Southern runaway (Evan Rachel
Wood) in Allen's native New York City. The role seems to fit David pretty
well:

Perhaps you noticed that Woody Allen isn't expressly mentioned, as in "A new comedy by Woody Allen." That
approach actually worked last year with Vicky Cristina Barcelona. After the film was in theaters,
you never heard or saw Allen's name in commercials, and that film went on to be one of his most
commercially successful films ever.
Addition by subtraction? I guess you could argue that Allen's core audience knows this is his movie,
anyway, and that he doesn't have the most marketable name in the world.

"A former Columbia Professor and self-proclaimed genius who came close to winning a Nobel Prize for Quantum Mechanics, Boris fancies himself the only one who fully comprehends the meaningless of all human aspirations, and the pitch-black chaos of the universe.”So I hope David completely nails the part and makes the movie the funniest Woody Allen movie in over a decade. Otherwise, wow, they sure have invested all of this poster in him.
