Friday, May 8, 2009 at 11:22AM Activision Considering 'Call of Duty' Movie
I had to read the article in The Hollywood Reporter twice to catch it, because the announcement was barely mentioned. While announcing plans to turn Guitar Hero into a reality TV series and possible event tour, Activision also said it's looking to turn Call of Duty into a movie.

These are the salad days for Activision, with first quarter earnings tripling the same period a year ago, pushing its revenue to $981 million in the first three months of the year. "We have growth and we're making money. That's better than others can say," noted Activision's Bobby Kotick. The reasons for that growth are simple: World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, and Guitar Hero. They're three of the top five video games of the year, and now Activision has future plans for all them across multiple platforms.
A Warcraft movie will happen; Legendary Pictures owns those rights. There has been talk of a Guitar Hero movie, as well, but Activision didn't think that was Option A a couple of months ago. Now, apparently, that will be the reality series.
But Call of Duty has huge upside as a film property. It's a graphic WWII game, and if Inglourious Basterds does very well this summer, it could once again spark interest in that kind of war movie. Of course, war flicks are never truly out of fashion, but if a Call of Duty movie happens, it could be incredibly intense.
This idea might also appeal to Activision because the game really needs no introduction to non-players as a movie. That's one of the good things about the war genre. And because there are so many battles re-enacted in the game series, you could split them up and have Call of Duty: The Battle of Berlin as a sequel down the line.

FTA - The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age. Kenneth Watt, Ecologist
