Remake Specialist Marcus Nispel to Direct 'Conan'

I haven't seen much of Marcus Nispel's work, but I think he's a much better fit for Conan than Brett Ratner. Of course, there's not much to see of Nispel's work, anwyay. He directed the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the recent Friday the 13th. In particular, I thought Chainsaw demonstrated a good visual style.

Like Ratner, Nispel was previously known for making music videos before transitioning to movies. His only non-remake to this point is Pathfinder, which you certainly couldn't call successful.

Variety reports that the signing is a major step in a nine-year process to get a new Conan movie made, and Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate are spending a lot of money to make sure it's a major action flick, set to be released sometime in 2010 at last check. The reboot is said to run closer to the original novels than the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger flick.

What's left now, of course, is casting Conan. We don't have any idea what direction they'll go. My thought is that it will be an unknown taking over the role because if it were a big star, you could fill in that blank before hiring a director for the project. And as long as this has taken, if you hired The Rock or somebody a couple of years ago, they'd be a lot further along.

Really? Wow, he's three-for-three on remakes. That doesn't speak extra well of him, does it?

Well, Pathfinder was actually a decent movie.

It used special effects to make reality look better and more heightened, which I think is a fair use of technology.

Apart from looking good, I thought the story held together.

It's actully more brainy and emotionally involved than it seems.

Maybe that's why people didn't get it.

Anyway, I think it's a good match for a Conan movie. The only trouble is of course casting Conan. But it won't be hard to top Schwarzenegger's moronic version.
