New 'Public Enemies' Clip and Featurette

TV commercials and trailers have been all over the place for Public Enemies in the past couple months, but the new gangster movie with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale has been pretty light on the actual movie clips until now.

Director Michael Mann has loved gunplay in the past, and this first clip from his new film is no exception. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I love the rat-a-tat-tat of a Tommy gun a lot more than the overpowering might of today's automatic weapons, "The Chicago Typewriter," they called it.

That gun is on proud display here as FBI man Melvin Purvis (Bale) raids the compound of John Dillinger (Depp):

And to go a little further behind-the-scenes, here's Entertainment Tonight with Depp and Bale (separately), plus a few clips of the movie:

I've maintained for months that I think this is a better September/October movie than a Fourth of July release, so I'll be interested to see what kind of firepower its stars can bring the week after Transformers is in theaters. I'm also really interested to see what Mann, one of my favorite American directors, can do with such a romanticized period.

Public Enemies opens on July 1st.

The footage looks a bit raw,,,

Interesting, digital hand held cameras work with stories set in modern times and sci-fi but in a period piece I gotta say, it's looking a little off. Love Michael Mann but I can't say I'm expecting much from this one. Hope it's better than it looks, he still needs to shake off the stink from Miami Vice.
