Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 10:27AM Rumor: Michael Sheen as Ernst Blofeld in 'Bond 23'?
I thought that at least in one of his two roles supporting Best Actor or Actress nominees, Michael Sheen should have received an Oscar nomination himself. But at least he's being recognized for his work in The Queen and Frost/Nixon in other ways. He's getting better roles, including a rather high profile stint in New Moon later this year.

But how about Sheen as the eternal Bond villain, Ernst Blofeld? The Guardian reports that Sheen is "reported to be in negoiations" to play Blofeld in the 23rd 007 movie. This isn't the first time the new Bond series has fallen back on old characters; Jeffrey Wright's Felix Leiter character has been played by seven other actors over the years and was, obviously, a key part of the past two films.
But Blofeld is a different kettle of fish. He's the man behind SPECTRE, the evil global criminal organization featured in more than one-fourth of all Bond films. He's the model for Dr. Evil and a major component in the legend and lore of the character.
And if the new 007 movies bring back Blofeld - and presumably SPECTRE - that could mean going back to the Ian Fleming stories, but more than likely, it's just an easy way to take advantage of the wealth of memorable Bond characters currently in cold storage.
If there's anything to it, Michael Sheen is an intriguing choice, though obviously not the first guy you'd attach to a picture of Donald Pleasance, the scarred face, and the Persian cat.
So I guess there are two questions here: Do you want them to reinvent Blofeld and do you want that actor to be Michael Sheen?
