Campbell Won't Pick Up the Phone for 'Scream 4'

Kevin Williamson has Tweeted (via Ace Showbiz) that Neve Campbell has passed on Scream 4, which apparently throws off his plans for the propsed new trilogy. "Trying to figure out a Sid-less scenario. She won't do it," wrote Williamson. "This sucks."

Wes Craven discussed the series a couple of weeks ago, and seemed to be deferring to whatever Williamson could devise, although it seems that the old master knew about the Campbell revelation already, saying at the time that the Arquette clan was pretty much locked in, but that we shouldn't expect anybody else from the original series.
One of the good things about the horror movie formula is that you don't need the heroes, only the villains. Eventually, the killers always move on to other nubile victims in the established series. So this news doesn't strike me as something that will ultimately put Scream 4 in a bad position, although you do have to wonder why Campbell - who can next be seen in a biopic of the composer Vivaldi - wouldn't want to flirt with mainstream success again.
Even though the film should recover just fine, if Williamson did have Sidney factored into his script, it's obviously going to need a re-write, so I feel sorry for him in that respect. However, since he did create this universe, if he can't come up with a compelling story not involving Campbell, then maybe that's a sign that we shouldn't revisit the Scream movies at all.

Just recast the part. Who cares if Neve Campbell is in it? Not like she has done so much since the Scream series. And I haven't heard one person ask "what happened to that really talented actress, Neve Campbell?"
Because no one cares.
