Robert Rodriguez Replaced for 'Barbarella' Remake

I don't know anyone who's lukewarm on Barbarella. You either dig it or you don't. I don't, but I do believe it's an interesting opportunity for a remake, perhaps precisely because I don't like it all that much. But they sure are having a hard time getting the sci-fi reboot in the air.

Robert Rodriguez was set to direct, presumably with Rose McGowan in the lead role. Half of that works for me and the other half is Rose McGowan, who tries way too hard to exude sex appeal, thus defeating the purpose of sex appeal. But producer Dino De Laurentiis wanted to shoot the movie in Germany for budgetary reasons, and Rodriguez didn't want to leave Austin for that long. The good news: No Rose McGowan as Barbarella.
So where does the project go now? Entertainment Weekly> says De Laurentiis is apparently zeroing in on Robert Luketic, the director of Legally Blonde and a couple other films that don't immediately make your mind jump to an erotic Roger Vadim sci-fi flick. Seems like a reach, which is unfortunate, because there are plenty of directors with some sci-fi experience who might be better choices.
It's also being reported that De Laurentiis will shop the project to a new studio, after Universal's initial budget concerns started the process through which Rodriguez departed. So we have a new director, a new studio yet to be named, and a new Barbarella (not pictured). I guess that's the key: Who do they get to play the part? My guess is if she's not ranked in both the Maxim and FHM 100 sexiest women lists, she won't get the part.

This wouldn't exactly save money, but why not have Rob Zombie do it?
I don't think I'd give this answer for many film problems but perhaps...
Paul Verhoeven?
I feel dirty just suggesting it.
And Barbarella is Diora Baird.
Oh, Diora Baird, she of the enviable dimensions. Not bound to sell many tickets that way, though. It'd be interesting to pair her with Verhoeven, and you wouldn't have to worry about the story because nobody would be paying any attention to that.
Give it to Tim Burton and we can see Johnny Depp... in drag...AGAIN, add that to the list of movies I'll never watch on a dare or bet.
