Box Office - Audiences Accept 'The Proposal'
Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 10:42AM
More than likely, The Hangover won't threepeat as box
office champion, an achievement we trumpeted on Thursday. It will probably still wind up in second place,
even though it isn't beginning the weekend that high on the chart.

The
Proposal will be your new champeen, unless this weekend's estimates
are being counted by the Iranian Election Commission. The Sandra Bullock-Ryan Reynolds comedy debuted with
$12.4 million, according to Box Office Mojo, which means Bullock will enjoy her first ever $20 million
opening weekend. Because this is new territory for her, it's hard to know exactly what the $12 million
means, but romcoms rarely spike on Friday and fall off immediately (which I think will happen with Year
One). So this should do a Not That Into You-like $27 - $30
million.
As for Year One, it's currently in second place, but don't count on that lasting. Movies with bad
reviews have paid the price for it this summer, and Year One earned its curiosity coin on Friday
night. As it is, the estimates put it less than $100,000 ahead of The Hangover at $8.5 million. I'd
still be very surprised if this made over $21 million this weekend.
The Hangover could come up just north of $150 million when the weekend is done, still enough to
make it the top-earning live-action comedy of the year, with about $50 million more in business still to
come. Up is still holding strong, and Pixar has
positioned it perfectly to make about $235 - $250 million before the next animated movie comes out. It
will be one of the studio's top three or four films when all is said and done.
We'll have full results tomorrow; check back to see if The Proposal can hang on on whether a big
Saturday and a consistent Sunday can put The Hangover back on top.

but it looks so trivial, predictable, and over-done! Granted it has Betty White who I love (yes, even from the 'Golden Girls'), but it just looks like a movie I've seen before. I'll wait for DVD.
Aw I was rooting for The Hangover but alls well that ends well.
Nice little tie in, with the political statement there Colin, I like it..
Oh I must say then, Freedom and Democracy for IRAN!!
is it ryan reynolds that pushed it over $20 million? i'd like to think so.
Ryan Reynolds has no track record and has the appeal of a parboiled turnip. His last foray into romantic comedy (Definitely, Maybe) couldn't even break $10 million on its opening weekend. While I do think that Bullock has a much greater appeal for the people seeing this film, I think this a case of marketing having sold the product well. And ultimately, with word of mouth being good so far, it should perform above norms for the genre.
All of those things are true, Anne. Maybe not equating Reynolds with a turnip, but it was sold well and it has had decent to good word of mouth. Also, it's the first movie aimed at women in over a month. I mean, it is called The Proposal after all.
