Trailer - Paul Giamatti as Himself in the Kaufman-esque 'Cold Souls'

Paul Giamatti is Paul Giamatti in the new film Cold Souls. This is a very Kaufman-esque idea. Actually, it's kind of like two Charlie Kaufman ideas, Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

There is the presentation of the famous actor as a fictionalized version of himself a la Being John Malkovich, plus the concept of physically removing from one's body something that isn't physical. In this case, it's Giamatti's soul, kind of like the erasing of memories in Eternal Sunshine.

But Giamatti is one of the best and this film got good reviews at Sundance, so I'll give it a shot. Here's the first trailer for the very odd Cold Souls:

Cold Souls is the feature debute for writer-director Sophie Barthes and from the trailer, at least, it appears to be a pretty assured start. The film begins its U.S. run on August 7th.
