Sunday, June 21, 2009 at 8:21PM Delicious New Poster for Park Chan-Wook's 'Thirst'
If you've not seen Oldboy, the Korean film from a handful of years ago directed by Park Chan-wook, do yourself and the rest of us a favor and clear a couple hours in your schedule to fit it in. You might not think it's brilliant and it may not be, but it's certainly a movie that will wake up your senses.
The writer-director has a new film headed to theaters later this year, and the good thing about a movie like Oldboy gaining a reputation stateside, even if it is after the fact, is that it makes the road that much easier for a foreign language vampire movie like Thirst to find healthy distribution in the U.S. We'll get Thirst beginning July 31st, so jot that down.
Here's an incredibly cool poster for Thirst, courtesy of IMP Awards.

I really am getting tired of having to put movies from another country into some little restrictive box simply because they weren't made in Hollywood. Great movies deserve to be seen, and since I don't know if Thirst is great or not, I'll expand the argument to include movies by great directors, which fits in this case.
I wonder if we'll ever see the day that movies like this can compete on a more level playing field in America with the domestically produced flicks. Can a foreign language film ever gain enough momentum to win the Oscar? That'll be a big day, if it ever happens.

in january, i saw 'let the right one in' while i was in the uk... it's an amazingly wonderful film about, well, vampires. i'd read the book, and, although the film left some elements out, the director, tomas alfredson, created a film that is as much a romance as it is a rather violent film.
so, what was the next step? why, schedule it for a remake, of course.. in english, so we don't have to listen to the language of swedon while we read subtitles.
sorry, on a rant about foreign films being passed over... or recreated to make the movie masses happy.
Honestly Oldboy is the Park to leave me the most underwhelmed, even though it is the best the get adjusted to.Mr. Vengeance and Lady say similar things far better and while it's not as interesting visually, JSA has something better to say. Oldboy is still great though.
In regards to LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. I tried to goo to the theatre in Chandler where they were showing the film. I wasn't able to attend although I did see RUN BITCH RUN very poorly, but slightly humours film.
I dont like that they will be making a remake of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN for an english audience, it takes away from the originality of the movie, and the feel of foreign movies. I do not believe that the AMERICAN version will be any good
The swedish version is perfect as is
