Nolan's 'Inception' Begins Filming in Japan

Even though Danny Boyle won the Oscar this year, the hottest commodity behind the camera is clearly Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight did what it did, and one of the more respected young directors in the industry jumped from the A-list to the top of everyone's list. He makes smart, artistic movies, and has developed his own style...even if it was a little longwinded in Dark Knight.

Warner Bros. obviously enjoys having him bat cleanup, so the studio is reportedly throwing $200 million at his next film, the non-Batman saga, Inception. Nolan will turn to sci-fi this time around and to another completely loaded cast, featuring (as seen above) Leo and Ken Watanabe.

Although the film will apparently globetrot and shoot in a handful of countries, principal photography has begun in Japan. NolanFans (via Filmonic) found this picture in a Japanese publication announcing that shooting was already underway.

Usually, we'll know when a movie starts shooting, at least when something on this scale rolls into production. In fact, in a lot of cases, studios will feed that information to the press for another extra headline. But it appears that Nolan has done an excellent job keeping secret more than the plot of his sci-fi movie that takes place in the architecture of the mind. If you know what that description means, you're one step ahead of me.

Inception opens next July and co-stars Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Marion Cotillard, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
