Sunday, June 21, 2009 at 10:01PM Watch Five Minutes from the Animated '9'
Two months out is a pretty strange time to release extended clips from films. Take, for example, that we just saw Public Enemies clips last week, and it's coming to theaters in ten days.

But Shane Acker's upcoming 3-D animated film, 9, spun into a feature from his own short, has a brand new five-minute clip you can watch. It's more instructive than the trailers in terms of whether or not the animation works, and I can safely say it really does.
Now, it's not the most beautiful palette you've ever seen, but it isn't supposed to be. It's ragdolls fighting for survival after the apocalypse, and if I had to see a mental picture of that description, I'd hope it would be as cool as what Acker has come up with. Check out an action sequence from 9:
Acker's short film and his concept for the feature film were strong enough to attach Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov as producers. Not too shabby. We'll see the rest of the film on 9.09.09. Funny how that works sometimes.

and it looks like they pulled it, dirty rats.
Wow that was quick, I caught it not long after Colin had posted. It's likely to resurface again somewhere on these internets if it hasn't already. The quality of the original trailer was better than this clip which is more to do with how such things find their way on the internet than a knock on the film itself. I liked the look and feel of it, which has to be just right if this film is going to work at all and it works. It's a little hard to appreciate out of context from the full story but definitely worth seeing if you can catch it.
From what I've seen, it's got that opening weekend (it lands on a Wednesday) to itself without competition from anything similar. I don't know that the content will necessarily lend to people coming out en masse which would be a shame and much of its success will likely spin from how well it gets marketed. What I thought to be a cute kids book has been spun into an animated film due September 19th when Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs hits. So 9 has little time to make an impression on the overall box office tally before a challenge arrives.
