Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 6:25PM David Fincher to Direct Sorkin's Facebook Movie
As surprising as it was that Aaron Sorkin would write a movie about Facebook, it's almost alarming that David Fincher will direct it. Yep, The Social Network, about the formation of Facebook, will begin production later this year and Variety says Fincher is the man behind the camera.
Facebook's rise is pretty historic. It began in 2004 as a better version of MySpace and has since soared past its predecessor in international and U.S. members. Facebook is currently the fourth most popular website in the world, with over 300 million members, and it employs a grand total of 850 people. MySpace, conversely, recently laid off 30% of its work force in the U.S. and even more staff overseas.
Presumably, the story will have something to do with Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire creator of Facebook who began the service while only a sophomore at Harvard. Now only 25, Zuckerberg is the youngest person to ever appear on the Forbes list of the 400 richest people in the world.
In addition to Sorkin's script and Fincher's directorial prowess, the film will be partially financed by Trigger Street, meaning Kevin Spacey is on board as a producer.
I've gotta say, this better be one hell of a script. I can't see the draw of a young computer genius watching his bank account go up, up, up. By the way it has attracted Fincher, though, I'm more curious about it now than I was before. It's a fascinating story, but a cinematic one? That's where I have my doubts, as much as I respect the work of Fincher and Sorkin.

Why, Fincher, Why? Please bring back the real David Fincher, he disappeared after Zodiac.
I don't see how this will turn into a movie, but they're making everything else, why not this too? speaking of making everything possible, where's the gummi bears movie?
and I didn't notice the whole picture you have there till then end, lol that's great
Are we sure this facebook movie is about Zuckerberg in a sort of 'bio-pic' of the social network or perhaps could it be more in line with Fight Club, meaning it satirizes the culture surrounding these kind of websites and internet communities in general. If its a straight retelling of the rise of facebook I can't see it being that interesting or why Fincher would sign on. He's such an atmospheric director I can't imagine it being purely a non-fiction account of the medium. He's never made a bad movie, at least a badly directed movie, eventhough Alien3 lacked brains and Button was overblown, they all have really great style.
From Sorkin last summer, when he started a Facebook page for research:
"I've just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page."
Doesn't sound like a satire.
Yikes... that quote makes it sound about as exciting as waiting for the constant status updates and profile picture changes.
This is an interesting and informative site.
