Ed McMahon (1923 - 2009)

Ed McMahon, the trusted sidekick of late night king Johnny Carson, has passed away at the age of 86. McMahon was beset by health and financial problems in his final years, spoofing his own misfortune in a Super Bowl commercial this February. His career working with Carson began in the 1950s on the game show Who Do You Trust?, and during his time on The Tonight Show, McMahon became a host himself, appearing for a number of years on Star Search and the long running TV's Bloopers & Practical Jokes. Known for his boisterous and everpresent laugh and his signature introduction of "Heeeere's Johnny!", McMahon's career in show business began only after he was an honest to goodness war hero, serving as a Marine fighter pilot in WWII, and flying 85 tactical missions in Korea. He remained in the Marine Corps Reserve even after his time on The Tonight Show began, eventually earning the rank of Colonel, and achieving the status of Brigadier General in the California Air National Guard. It was revealed earlier this year that McMahon had spent a month in the hospital for treatment of bone cancer.
