'Pandorum' Release Date Moved to September 18th
Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 1:03AM
We received word from Overture Films late yesterday that Pandorum, the upcoming horror/sci-fi film with the arresting trailers and the stop-you-in-your-tracks posters, has been pushed back a couple of weeks. Originally scheduled for September 4th, the movie will now arrive on September 18th.

Even though the 18th is more crowded, with five wide releases including Jennifer's Body, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Jennifer Aniston's Love Happens, the weekend of September 4th would have offered more direct competition. I can't say if that's the reason for the change, but now Pandorum will avoid Gamer and the horror movie Carriers with Star Trek's Chris Pine.
Pandorum stars Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster as astronauts who wake up in hyper-sleep chambers with no memories of who they are or why they're on board the vessel. And it only gets worse from there.
I don't make much of the change; it seems strategic rather than desperate. Big studios will bury forgotten movies on isolated weekends to get them in theaters, thus fulfilling some kind of contractual obligations, but usually smaller studios that smell a potential hit take the release dates really seriously. This one has tons of online buzz, considering all the variables, so I wouldn't be surprised if Overture just likes the 18th more. I can't really see that as a bad move.
