Watch Seven New Clips from 'Public Enemies'
Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 8:26AM
Prior to the official kickoff of summer, I projected Public Enemies as the second-best movie of the summer. Of course, I had it behind Terminator Salvation, so that's a pretty easy hurdle to clear at this point. However, with Up, Star Trek, and The Hangover, being the silver medal winner this summer actually means something.

The film is directed by one of my favorites, Michael Mann, and stars two big ticket leading men who couldn't say that six years ago, Christian Bale and Johnny Depp. Recent Oscar winner Marion Cotillard and Billy Crudup are also part of the plan. Yeah, it's easy to see why this one would look so good on paper.
We had to wait a long time to get clips from Public Enemies, and the first one debuted maybe a week ago or so. Now there are seven more, all of which are referenced in the trailers, so it's not like you're seeing stuff that's totally brand new.
You can see the rest of the film in exactly one week, when Public Enemies kicks off the Fourth of July holiday a couple days early.

This is for sure the movie I have been waiting for since summer movies began. Michael Mann hasn't let me down yet. Plus it's refreshing to see Johnny Depp with out an English accent.
I was really looking forward to this for many reasons. First because the real -life story of Dillinger and Purvis is good enough to film. Second, because the role of Dillinger seems tailor-made for Depp. Third, because Micahel Mann has made some really good films, like Heat which is still one of my all-time favourites.
But, what the hell!?
That harsh digital look is really not working for this movie. It looks like a TV-feature shot by amateurs.
While I support the use of digital cameras, every effort must be made to make it look good. Fincher uses digital while still retaining a filmic feel to it.
Clearly, there's been some errors made in the lighting and post-processing of the material here.
