Peter Jackson on 'Lovely Bones,' 'Tintin,' 'Hobbit'

Peter Jackson has a lot of stuff lined up, and he took the opportunity to update all of them during a recent chat with the New Zealand edition of Stuff (which came to our attention through Filmonic). The three projects are, in chronological order, The Lovely Bones, Tintin, and The Hobbit.

The first, an adaptation of the Alice Sebold book, was delayed from an early 2009 release to the holidays. On first blush, one might think that was a bad thing, especially because star Ryan Gosling backed out as cameras were set to roll and Mark Wahlberg had to fill in at the last minute. Wahlberg has his moments, but he's no Ryan Gosling. Still, Jackson says the release date shift isn't a negative:

“When we showed them the cut late last year, they decided to delay the release until December to plop it into the “awards season”, which is a nice vote of confidence in the movie...I wish we had this time on King Kong, which we badly wanted to reduce by 20 minutes, but we ran out of time before figuring out how to do it.”So look for Jackson's Lovely Bones on December 11th. As for The Hobbit and Tintin, it looks as though Jackson's doing post-production on the animated Spielberg film right now at Weta and he'll turn his attention to The Hobbit, briefly, next year. That highly anticipated two-film series will begin shooting in March. After that production wraps, he'll cozy up to directing the second Tintin flick, with pre-production beginning next summer. The release dates are December 2010 for Tintin and December 2011 for The Hobbit, with the sequels following in fairly quick succession, but I guess the easiest way to look at it is just to mark your calendars for Peter Jackson movies from now until 2014.

I don't understand why Ryan Gosling should be so much better than Mark Wahlberg. Mark Wahlberg may be behaving like a dick off-screen but I he always is 100% involved in his roles.
Don't forget that many accomplished actor have been heavily questioned before gaining acceptance. People such as Sean Penn were not taken seriously despite showing really good promise early in films such as The Falcon and the Snowman. Both Johnny Depp and Heath Ledger were initially dismissed as heart-throbs despite their obvious talents.
Mark Wahlberg was the best thing in The Departed, despite very limited screen time, and he very deservedly got a nomination for it.
Back to Jackson, it's good to hear him admitting to making mistakes on King Kong. To reduce the length of the film would have been quite easy though. They could just have cut the first 45 minutes out all together as the prologue was one of the least interesting pieces of film that I have seen.
Still, with Jackson finally exercising some self-criticism, we might begin to hope for the new films.
I agree with the assessment. Wahlberg does have his moments...and is very good at playing certain roles....but he doesn't have much depth. At least not as much depth as Ryan Gosling. Wahlberg was good in The Departed....and that's the type of role he's good at.
Being 100% invested in your role...doesn't neccessarily mean you're going to be good at it. It just means you're giving it your best. I can give myself 100% to basketball...but I'm still not a good baskeball player.
I am excited for Lovely Bones, they have a really talented young actress (Saoirse Ronan) starring in it. I am a fan of hers. I have heard Oscar buzz for the film and all we've seen is 3 pictures. I dont want to follow everyone saying that yet. I hope it happens though.
I hope that the movie is as good as people believe it will be.
What I dont understand is, if the movie is practically completed, how come we don't get to see any trailersor clips whatsoever. Atleast a teaser trailer would be very much appreciated. Even movies that are not due till 2010 already have teaser trailers popping up. Yes, I think its a good idea to push back the release date for awards season, and it may seem like a good idea back then, but not anymore. This is because the Academy had announced that there will now be 10 Best Picture nominees instead of 5. So now, regardless whether the Lovely bones was released in early 2009 or late 2009, it still would have got nominated (the competition for a movie released early in the year would now be less stiff, since the 10 best picture nomination announcement)
Furthermore, it may seem too late, but if the academy had made this announcement sometime last year, then i think the producers of the lovely bones would have kept its initial release date. this is because, the studio would feel with 10 best picture nominations, the lovely bones would have been a sure fire nomination, and not only that, but an early release would have created less competition in the box office - less blockbuster released in early time of the year, which means the lovely bones will now be competiting with blockbuster movies like AVATAR and other massive movies releasing end of the year
Having said that, still, Jackson is one of my best filmakers (and storytellers) out there, and cant wait to see his vision of the lovely bones
There is no trailer for Avatar nor Inviticus and they are coming out in December also. It is just how things go. People are saying that he might put out the trailer of Lovely Bones during the premiere of District 9, since he is a producer of that film also.
I am like you though, anxiously awaiting the trailer.
Ryan Gosling is a good actor but is far too young to play the father of a 14-year-old. Mark Wahlberg has shown some strong work and I hope he does this role justice.
I am anxious to see a trailer for this film too (I read the book and am excited to see how it will be interpreted visually).
