Ivan Reitman Considers Directing 'Ghostbusters III'

While cautioning that "all the casting and directing speculation is really just speculation,” Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman says he isn't repelled by the notion of directing the third movie in the series, which has become one of the more talked about sequels on the horizon.

In an interview with MTV, Reitman insists, “I’ve never ruled [directing it] out,” adding, “I certainly was responsible in every capacity for the first two movies so I certainly wouldn’t wander away from the third one — especially if it’s something we all think is worth doing.”

The "we all" means Reitman and the original cast of Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Dan Aykroyd, and the they in his "we all" are all committed to the project. So that's got to be worth something. The only thing is, according to both Ramis and Aykoryd, the old Ghostbusters will be window dressing in a film featuring a new cast.

Aykroyd has hinted that we might see a female Ghostbuster (or maybe two), and Reitman confirms that idea had been discussed with new writers Gene Stupnisky and Lee Eisenberg. “The script is going to be turned in a month or so and we’ll see,” says the once and possible future Ghostbusters director.

Say what you will about the need for a third movie, I think everyone knows more than they're letting on. My hunch is Eisenberg and Stupnisky are not in a bunker somewhere hammering out a script by themselves. I believe they're probably taking concepts from Ramis and Aykroyd and putting a 21st century comedic spin on them. I also have a feeling this thing has been pretty much cast already and that rather than announcing a few details over time, the Ghostbusters team will make a giant announcement all at once.

I could be wrong, but I just find there's an awful lot of party line in everyone's answers on the script, so while I don't think it's technically written, nobody who reads the first draft is going to be surprised by what they find.
