James Cameron Joins New 'Heavy Metal' Anthology
Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 2:05PM
Film School Rejects talked to Kevin Eastman, whose name you no doubt know if you're a
fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He's one of the co-creators of that franchise, and he's also
heavily involved with the new Heavy Metal movie. And so are some of the biggest directors in
Hollywood, as it turns out.

David Fincher is locked in, and Eastman confirms a few other names you might have heard of. In fact, the
talent involved is probably more familiar than Heavy Metal itself. That's a shame given how unique
the original film was, which also supplied one of the great underrated rock soundtracks of the 70s and
80s.
"I’ve got breaking news that Fincher and James Cameron are going to be Co-Executive Producers on the film.
Fincher will direct one. Cameron will direct one. Zack Snyder is going to direct one and Gore Verbinski is
going to," Eastman said. "Mark Osborne and Jack Black from Tenacious D
are going to do a comedy segment for the film."
But wait, There's more: "Three other directors have agreed but we haven’t signed them, but they’re equally
as jaw-dropping. So we’re on cloud nine to be working with such an amazing amount of talent.”
Who would be equally as jaw-dropping as James Cameron? I can really only think of two: Tim Burton and
Christopher Nolan. Burton has animation experience, although he's not really a sci-fi guy. Nolan on the
other hand...makes a great deal of sense. I'm just speculating, of course, but given the nature of the
project (animated science fiction anthology), there aren't many bigger names who could make a smooth
transition to that the way Nolan could.
But who knows? I'm just doing what anybody would. This seemed like a doomed project about ten months ago,
but it's really roaring back now. Anthology films typically don't do well, but this one would generate a
ton of interest, I imagine.

What about Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, or George Lucas? And I'm sorry, but I have to say it: While a new SF anthology with rock music sounds like a lot of fun, the original Heavy Metal is a steaming pile of crap.
Perhaps I phrased it poorly: I can only think of two who might be interested. I highly doubt any of those three guys would do it.
While I detest, deplore and despise the current spate of comic book movies, Heavy Metal sounds like something I would actually pay money to see. Especially if made by those people.
One factor that is more important than the producers, is however the rating chosen. It would have to be an R to do justice to the material.
Presumably the studio will want a PG-13 to target the full Dark Knight audience?
That's a good question. The first one went for the R, and the material in the comic, at least years and years ago, was also more mature. I'd like to see them go for the R, as well, and in general I think there need to be more big budget R-rated 'toons.
I agree that this sounds pretty cool, what with those directors rumored and all, but I fear the music these directors have to choose from. The original had such an awesome soundtrack. I don't think the music these days is up to snuff for something like this. And yes, I realize how old that makes me sound.
