'Puss in Boots' Will Be the All-Important Origin Story

When DreamWorks announced its animation slate until the end of 2012, the studio
finally confirmed and lined up the most natural spin-off at its disposal, a movie featuring Puss in Boots
from Shrek. Voiced by Antonio Banderas in the second and third films in the series, Puss in Boots
always seemed destined to get his own shot, and a lot of that credit goes to Banderas himself.

The actor told Coming Soon that he's still working in the recording booth for Shrek Forever After
and that he has just recently seen what's in store for Puss in Boots. "It looks unbelievable,"
Banderas enthused.

"They've been working very, very heavy on the script for almost three years, and they didn't just want to give me any kind of thing until the other day when Jeffrey finally called me and he said it was done. I went there and I was very surprised how the movie is going to take off. I love it."And, although it feels a bit odd to say this, Puss in Boots will be an origin story. "Yes, we're going to go from the time he's a very little cat, so you see actually why and how he becomes an adult killer, and the reasons why he ends up on that path," said Banderas. Among the adjectives Banderas used to describe the film, which we won't see for another three years, were "epic," "emotional," and "special." I'm glad to hear the studio has taken its time with it. Just look at Pixar, as everyone else in the animation game does from a pretty good distance. The Pixar team spends years and years developing the films, which is what should trouble us about the immediate Kung Fu Panda sequel. Again, it's clear to me that this is the strongest character from the Shrek films, so if you're going to go the spin-off route, you might as well work to get it right.
