Writer Updates 'Beverly Hills Cop 4'
Sunday, June 7, 2009 at 2:11PM
The fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie - which we heard was just going with the original title instead of being a numbered edition - is still in the development stage, but Eddie Murphy will play Axel Foley one more time and Brett Ratner is aboard to direct, at least for now. The script is being written by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, perhaps best known for their work on last summer's Wanted.

Haas tells Moviehole that they're working on a second draft of the script, which has its beginnings in a completely unrelated screenplay. "Michael and I wrote a spec script called Dying Day, a dark action movie about two FBI field agents in LA who discover their whole office is crooked," Haas says. "Paramount bought it and asked us to convert it into the next Axel Foley movie...which sounded like a cool challenge."
But Haas and Brandt aren't working on a comedy in their mind; Haas says it's a "straight-up action movie" that Murphy will review and see where he can add humor. "We're not at that point yet."
The scary part, of course, is leaving the comedy up to the broken barometer of Eddie Murphy, but I do like that both the writers and the studio are more interested in making an action movie with comedy rather than the other way around.
