Jessica Biel Rumored for 'Thor' Love Interest

OK, so the latest Thor casting rumor has Natalie Portman out and Jessica Biel in. This is worth noting for a few reasons, not the least of which is that Portman, an actress of considerable heft, would leave a cast with very little audience recognition.

Certainly, on the other hand, Biel is a bigger "name" as those things go, but I don't think I need to tell you that she's not in Portman's league on screen. However, she's probably a better fit for a movie like Thor than Portman could ever be, especially if there's any action involved. Nuke The Fridge says that Biel is in talks to play Thor's love interest, but points out specifically that she won't be Jane Foster, the arm candy of Thor's alter ego, Donald Blake.

Biel is certainly fine as an actress, but I've seen her try more serious work and it's not convincing. The only reason that could be a problem is because Marvel hired a Shakespeare specialist in Kenneth Branagh to direct, and he is apparently taking the film down some pretty dramatic roads.

Not lost in this is Biel's constant connection to Wonder Woman, which is more fan buzz than anything else. But if I were her agent, I'd push her that direction over this one, in large part because Thor just can't seem to get out of its own way. All the decisions are confusing and not easy to justify, including word that she might join the cast. With Wonder Woman, at least it makes some sense.

Again, I stress that this isn't confirmed by Marvel and it could just be the easiest rumor to pass along at the moment. But she'd be an upgrade in one area over Portman and a definite drawback in another. Maybe it's a really sweet offer, though I doubt it with what the comic book titan is paying Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johansson for the established Iron Man brand.

Oh, no. Natalie Portman wouldn't work as an action heroine. Not at all.

Jessica Biel would be excellent, of course.

I thought she was really nice in Blade Trinity, for instance.

If Biel is going to play a love interest to Thor it will probably be in the role of SIf. An Asgardian warrior in her own right, she is an on-again off-again love interest to Thor.
