'Hangover' Sequel Set for Memorial Day 2011

Surprise, surprise. Six weeks ago, nobody would have ever thought we'd say the only thing standing between The Hangover and history is Beverly Hills Cop. But now, the summer's best and biggest comedy trails only Eddie Murphy on the all-time list of R-rated comedies. It's about $25 million away from that number, and it could exceed that amount and wind up the number three R-rated movie ever, behind only The Passion of the Christ and The Matrix Reloaded.

And director Todd Phillips is getting paid. Variety reports that because he ditched his salary for back end consideration, Phillips stands to earn at least $35 million from the film. And in an environment where Murphy can somehow still generate $40 million in a year for flops, Phillips has no doubt earned his money.

The article also reports that the Hangover sequel is set for a Memorial Day 2011 release, and will begin production in October 2010. All the principal cast will return, and Phillips will work with Zach Galifianakis beginning in October on a comedy called Due Date, that will be released on June 6th next year (just like The Hangover).

Due Date is a road trip comedy with Galifianakis playing an unlikely cross-country traveling companion for a man racing to get home for the birth of his child. It's Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, basically. The Steve Martin role has not been cast yet.

I hope Phillips doesn't saturate himself with so many projects. He worked on The Hangover for quite a while, and if he shoots a film in October, that doesn't give him nearly as much time to craft the sequel, and good comedy sequels are really hard to find.
