Could a New Kato Casting Call Completely Doom 'The Green Hornet'?

And with that, I'm tagging The Green Hornet as a bomb. Sure, we're still exactly a year away from the movie being released, but this film is turning the phrase "no news is good news" on its head: Anything we hear is bad news.

Whenever it was, nine months ago or something, the Seth Rogen star vehicle picked up steam with the spot-on selection of Stephen Chow to not only play The Green Hornet's trusty bad-ass manservant Kato but also to direct. It's perfect. That didn't last, though. Chow walked away from directing, dropping hints that he might not even be in the film.

Enter Michel Gondry. He's a great director, no question, but is he the right guy for this job? Would you hire Francis Ford Copolla to make a movie about a 40-year-old boy in the fifth grade? Someone did; that movie is Jack. The point is, Gondry is at best an odd choice for a mainstream Seth Rogen action comedy.

The rumored addition of Cameron Diaz doesn't help, either, although it probably won't hurt in the long run. But now, Spoiler TV (via Slashfilm) has a new casting announcement for Kato. Stephen Chow, apparently, is dunzo. And because he was the only thing I was really looking forward to anyway, so is the movie.

"[KATO] ALL ASIAN ETHNICITIES, Male, 20’s - early 40’s. Brit Reid’s manservant/chauffeur by day and Green Hornet’s martial arts-skilled sidekick by night. Actor doesn’t have to have Martial Arts experience.

Assuming for the moment that this is legitimate...what? Kato doesn't need martial arts experience? So then nobody in this movie will know how to handle themselves in a fight? Look, I'm enjoying the rise of Ken Jeong (the naked, effeminate gangster in The Hangover) as much as the next guy, but I don't want to see him as Kato. That. Would. Suck.

I think when you consider all the variables, including Sony's desperate move to switch opening dates with a more bankable Adam Sandler comedy next summer, The Green Hornet is shaping up to be one tremendous mistake.

If only they could just pull the plug.

Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet is the worst casting ever. We fans have said so. Nothing else really matters. As long as this is Seth Rogen's vanity project this is crap. Sony needs to kill this NOW!!!

THe only way the movie can work is if they hire a REAL martial artist!! One who can also act! Give the part to Mark Dacascos!!! He was awesome in DRIVE, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, and CRADLE TO THE GRAVE! He is the only choice for Kato!!

Oh well, it is like it never was.

you know...

just because the actor isn't martial arts-trained doesn't mean the character isn't.

it's called stunt doubles.

from what i hear, the script is good and nuanced enough that a great actor is of slightly higher priority than an impressive martial artist who can act. especially because said impressive martial artist could be the double for the actor.

even aside from that, studios these days are willing in to put in the time and effort to turn a non-martial artist into a well-trained screen fighter. how many martial arts films have you seen keanu reeves in before the matrix? (or carrie-anne moss, or laurence fishburne, or hugo weaving...)
