McCartney Returns to Ed Sullivan Theater Wednesday
Monday, July 13, 2009 at 10:19AM
Though it won't have the overwhelming cultural impact of his first performance on that stage back in 1964, Paul McCartney will return to the site of The Beatles' American television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show when he makes his first appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman this Wednesday night.

McCartney plays New York City beginning this Friday with three dates at the new Citi Field. The mini-tour will also take him to FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, Fenway Park for two days, Atlanta's Piedmont Park, my hometown of Tulsa on August 17th, and then wrapping up at the new Dallas Cowboys stadium on August 19th.
Sir Paul is the only guest listed on Letterman's site for Wednesday, which announces that Paul will both perform and be interviewed. I would expect plenty of Beatles talk as well as a question or two about Michael Jackson, with whom McCartney recorded a couple of songs. Jackson, of course, bought the publishing rights to the early Beatles catalog back in the 1980s. I also hope he discusses the new Rock Band Beatles game, due out in September.
Even though his music isn't what it once was, McCartney is still the most successful writer/performer in the history of pop music, and a major part of the most influential band that there will probably ever be. So just from a historical perspective, to see him back on the stage that helped start it all will be kind of cool.
