'Bridget Jones' Goes Back for Thirds
Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 10:48PM
It happens from time to time that a bad sequel completely eclipses a good original film, and that was certainly the case with Bridget Jones. The Edge of Reason was just awful, but audiences around the world still made it a smash, even though American crowds stayed away, by and large.

But perhaps because the sequel somehow raked in a quarter-billion in foreign markets, Working Title has announced a third movie in the series. The company says Renee Zellweger will be back, although what option does she really have? Her career has stalled ever since The Edge of Reason and this is one of her signature roles.
The threequel won't go into production for at least a year and according to Variety may draw its inspiration from a series of Helen Fielding newspaper articles from 2005, in which Bridget tries desperately to get pregnant. To me, the key word seems to be "desperately" all the way around.
In other news, Working Title also says it has locked up Cate Blanchett for another period bio-pic, this time playing Lady Edwina Mountbatten during the last days of imperial rule in India for the film Indian Summer, which will be directed by Atonement's Joe Wright.
