Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 9:25AM Dark Horse Comic 'Fear Agent' May Become a Movie
So far, we haven't seen a lot of wildly successful independent comic book movies. Like video games, the audience is there, the interest is there, but the studios haven't committed the kinds of resources we need on a consistent basis to make a steady stream of great films. There are good ones, sure, like the Hellboy movies, but it's not quite a pipeline yet. And when I say "independent," I don't mean published out of a guy's basement, necessarily, just that they don't hit the screen with Marvel and DC pushing them down our throats.

Universal thinks it has a keeper, though. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the Dark Horse series Fear Agent is getting a close look from the studio. From what I know of Fear Agent - which I admit is very little - the lead character, Heath Huston, is kind of a boozing Han Solo-meets-Ash type. He bounces from place to place in outer space fighting aliens, and at one point in the series, part of Earth gets blowed up real good.
The series, written by Rick Remender, began in 2005 with Image Comics but hopped over to Dark Horse the next year. Dark Horse, of course, jumped into the movie development game a few years ago and has launched both Hellboy flicks and 30 Days of Night. Universal and Dark Horse shook hands on a distribution deal last year, and this film would be a part of that.
The concept seems tailor made for a breakthrough performance in the role of the swaggering Texas drunk in space, the last fear agent in the universe. The comics are heavy on action and a bit of horror and less interested in a believable form of sci-fi.
The project is in early development at Universal so if a movie happens, it's probably no sooner than two years away. The script doesn't even have a writer at this point, so clearly, we've got a while to wait.
