Arquettes Make 'Scream 4' a Family Affair

The news has slowly been coming in about a fourth Scream movie, and because it's not all the same source, that's probably a good sign for the film. Or at least, it's a good sign that the film will be moving forward. Wes Craven said Kevin Williamson was writing it, then Williamson said Neve Campbell turned down the chance to return as Sidney Bristow, and now David Arquette says he and the missus are gung ho.

"We are going to be doing Scream 4," Arquette told The Fifth Letter of the Alphabet, referring, of course, to himself and Courteney Cox. "Kevin Williamson is writing the script at this moment, and hopefully Wes Craven is going to direct."

Craven has said he'd produce it, but the directing duties are still up in the air, though I'd be surprised if Craven let the chance pass him by if it's just sitting there waiting for him. But the return of the Arquettes is no real surprise, and in fact, we said it was highly likely just a few weeks ago, for the same reason Arquette now cites.

"I fell in love with my wife on Scream, so the opportunity to bring [Dewey] back to life and for my wife to play that really bitchy character again, it's just going to be really fun."

The idea is to have this film launch a new trilogy, but we don't know yet exactly if this will be a torch passing film introducing a new batch of characters or if it will just continue the saga. Arquette says that Williamson has provided him "the broad strokes" of the script, but wouldn't even reveal any of the secrets.
