Robert De Niro Joining Rodriguez' 'Machete'?
Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 3:51PM
Really? I just read at Bloody Disgusting that Robert DeNiro will play a corrupt
senator in Robert Rodriguez' Machete. What caught my eye is not the corrupt senator part, sadly,
for that's more true with each passing day, but the addition of De Niro is certainly unexpected.

He would join Danny Trejo, who is naturally playing the title role of a former Federale who seeks revenge
- bloody, bloody revenge - on the company that betrayed him. BD.com's source also claims Michelle
Rodriguez is on board, and my guess is she'll play one tough chica. And Jonah Hill will apparently be in
the film, as well, playing a character named Julio.
The film, as you probably know, isn't coming out of the clear blue sky; fans have been waiting for it
since the opening moments of Grindhouse, which featured a series of fake trailers for exploitation
movies. Personally, I thought Machete and Edgar Wright's Don't were the best things about
the entire Grindhouse experience.
How reliable is the information? Well, I trust Bloody Disgusting. They're usually well ahead of the game
and they're more accurate than most sites. If I want genre news, it's the first place I check. We'll wait
to see an official announcement about De Niro, but for the time being I'll operate under the assumption
that he's on board.
Because I am operating under that assumption, I'm now envisioning the gruesome manner in which De Niro's character will die.

Refreshing. The whole project lacked a little something. But with DeNiro I think it may even get a limited theatrical run. Maybe even not in US, especially not in US.
Christ, is DeNiro making bad career moves these days. I remember you got all worked up about Steve Martin wasting his talents but, be honest, this guy hasn't made anything remembling a good movie in over a decade. His comic subtlety in What Just Happened and bizarre Stardust cameo aside, Ronin was the last movie he was involved with that wasn't a complete waste of his talent.
