New International 'Sherlock Holmes' Trailer

I can't shake the feeling that Sherlock Holmes cast member Mark Strong might actually be a better Holmes than Robert Downey, Jr. Or at least, he might be a better Holmes that we already know. Guy Ritchie, of course, has other plans.

Ritchie's movie will turn the legendary detective on his ear, imbuing him with personality traits Holmes never really shows in the Arthur Conan Doyle. Good move? Hard to say. Unprecedented? No. High degree of difficulty? Yeah. Oh yeah.

The curious thing is I believe Downey could probably play a pretty good Holmes the way he's been drawn for over a century, although that's not the sort of madcap bohemian we know him for. But the way the characters are projected in the trailers so far, Strong looks the part and no doubt displays more of the sobering intellect we're used to. Just sayin'.

Here's a second trailer, which I love outside of the physical comedy. It looks of the period, which is important, and all the characters seem to go where Ritchie wants them to go. He's either hit the mark or he's waaaay off.

Sherlock Holmes will be one of the big event movies of the winter, coming out on December 25th, a day that already carries meaning to some people.

It's impossible to judge a film by its trailer but at least this one doesn't give any cause for alarm. The brief snippets of dialogue don't seem too brilliant though and Downey's accent is a bit off.

Still if it's fun, irreverent and stylish, as the trailer seems to imply, then Richie might have a hit on his hands.

Then again, Avatar may kill it completely, so you'd have to question the release date.

Actually, I don't truly believe that Avatar will kill any movie off. It is not based on the true Avatar television show either. So, it is also a reinvention of sorts. That has made alot of people I know not want to see it. We were all fans of the real series- Avatar: the Airbender . That movie comes out next year-we are anticipating that one. Avatar by James Cameron I believe will be seen for its state of the art effects, not because it's like the series format. He maybe should have named his another name. It is really hard to say. I don't go by winner or loser films - I pay to see what I will enjoy. So, I am looking forward to seeing Sherlock Holmes. They still have 5 more months to keep giving the fans trailers so we can see the plot and the intelligence RDJ brings to the role. I think he'll do just fine. The only time I really doubt release times is during the summer, during the big blockbuster weeks. Then I question why studios release good movies and put them up against movies like Transformers. I thought your comments to the above article were GREAT! Thanks.

I think James Cameron's Avatar will be tough for any film to beat around Christmas. The hype could be enormous.

The Last Airbender, which opens next summer, may not be such a threat to Sherlock Holmes.

With Sherlock Holmes seemingly complete, I think they should release it during the autumn to avoid the clash with Cameron's Avatar.

They did have it set up for November, but moved it to Christmas. I don't know what Avatar will do. Could it be a big hit? Well, it could make a lot of money, but it has to because the film cost so much to make. I don't believe there's any precedent for it, and you can't use "director of Titanic" to make any sort of prediction. It could be too much about the effects and drive people crazy or it could be a brilliant synthesis of everything.

Combine James Cameron's storytelling and eye for visuals and add the first really viable 3D experience and the success should be fait accompli.

For Avatar to bomb, it would have to be really lousy and upset people's expectations drastically.

If it keeps its promises, it could be one of those films that people go to see eight times in a row in the cinema as there is no rival home system.

I can't see how there's a measurable percentage of the audience that would see it more than twice. It's great if the genre fans get behind it, but is a three-hour 3-D movie set on another planet really going to be mainstream enough to attract average moviegoers?

For Avatar to bomb, it has to make under about $400 million worldwide. Probably will make more than that, but for it to be a "hit" in the traditional profit margin game, it's got to be $600 or $700 million or more. And if it's slow here in the U.S., maybe $150 million or so, then you've got a potential problem.

I'm always leery of filmmakers who go off on their own and come back ten years later with something ambitious. There's not a good track record for it. And no movie has to be really lousy to bomb, but you're right about the expectations. But again, whose expectations?

Will women go? Will guys who just love Transformers-style action and aren't interested in storytelling check it out? I have no doubt it will string together a bunch of receipts from the people who read about Comic Con, but there are tons of movie fans who hate 3-D, tons of movie fans who hate long movies, and tons of movie fans who won't get past the trailer just because.

I don't think there's a strong guarantee that this will do well, or at least, as well as it needs to do for the studios to justify this kind of filmmaking extravagance.

LISTEN EVERYONE HERE is JINXING the damn movie!!!!!!

STOOOOOPPPP!!! PLZZZ....

I mean there has been what, just1 image out about the entire film.... There has been no trailer, no nothing, no James Cameron interview stuff that's worth noting, no NOTHING!!!

We shouldnt be discussing how good or bad it will do just yet, even thought it seems from the discussion everyone is AMPED about it and TALKING about it and thats never a bad thing....

I HOPE IT WILL BE BRILLIANT AND EVERYONE WILL SEE IT!!!!!!!!!

But for some reason BIG movies arent BIG anymore , I mean case in point

- Terminator (yes it had horrible reviews and sucked) but still even die hard fans didnt see it...

- Harry Potter (GREAT REVIEWS!!! HAILED AS THE BEST POTTER YET) and still hasn't reached the VERY HIGH expectations, RIGHT COLIN????? Yes indeed so... but it still can happen, I doubt it, but hope it does, it deserves it

- Transformers (shitty reviews as well) It also did not exceed HIGH EXPECTATIONS like some thought it would or should...

also Watchmen, XMEN,

Films that really made A LOT of money HAVE NOT been big budget films with the only exception of STAR TREK .... they've been

-The Hangover
-Fast & Furious (of all the fucken movies lol)
-Night at the Museum
-The Proposal (dont ask me , but yes $150 mill worldwide)
SO MY POINT IS .....

BIG BUDGET FILMS HAVE IF THE TREND CONTINUES, NOT DONE TOO WELL WITH REACHING THEIR VERY HIGH EXPECTATIONS,

AND SMALLER FILMS FOR SOME REASON, GREAT REVIEWS OR NOT, HAVE BEEN MAKING THE MOST MONEY.....

So I'am worried for AVATAR there are many reasons that it could be a failure but I REALLY AM HOLDING OUT, JAMES CAMERON WILL SURPRISE US AND REGAIN HIS LEGENDARY STATUS AS AN AMAZING DIRECTOR with a BRILLIANT VISION

there my essay is done!

i think 'sherlock holmes' looks okay, not really sure with way it will go- but i agree completely with your assessment about the comedy and the casting of downey jr(whose performance from those few clips is very worrying- seems very annoying and silly).

Funny how this one veered off into Avatar-land... If it were a fake I'm sure we would have heard by now. Besides, James Cameron made two of the best sci-fi action movies ever, Aliens and Terminator 2. That's no fluke.

If it is what everyone says it is, we'll probablly be shaking our heads at 2D in a few years from now. Just remember how quickly SD 4:3 went old when HD 16:9 appeared. Why would we not want 3D and what better way to beat internet pirates?

As to Sherlock Holmes, I think it would stand a better chance if it were released in the second half of November, which would give it a month to run before, well you know...
