Sunday, July 19, 2009 at 12:19AM Sacha Baron Cohen Retires 'Brüno'
I hope you enjoyed Brüno if you are a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen, because the comedian says, just like Borat three years ago, the character is done.

With three movies now devoted to characters featured on Da Ali G Show, Cohen says each of them have hit the end of their road. The chameleon tells WENN, "It's wonderful that the films are successful, but every new person who sees the movie is one less person I can be Borat or Brüno with again, so finishing a movie means having to say goodbye."
"Admitting that you're never going to play the character again is like saying goodbye to a loved one. And that's hard."
He has a point about not being able to keep these characters around for much longer. It would be nearly impossible for them to find continued success after they're splashed all over the mainstream. I guess my doubt comes from what Cohen would do next. He has played some characters in other films, but he has become so well known for the style of Borat that simply being a guy who does traditional comedies may not appeal to the members of his newfound audience. Fans who have been with him since the beginning would probably be more understanding of new ventures than people who don't know there's a bad Ali G movie back there.
Softening the blow of "saying goodbye to a loved one" is the money Cohen has raked in from his past two movies. Borat made him very wealthy and before Brüno was released, Universal paid him about $40 million to distribute the movie. So he's got some time to think of his next big move before needing to worry about the rent.

I guess this is good time to kill off the character since Bruno got murdered at the box office this weekend (-72.7%).
Well according to IMDB he has 4 projects in the making, including a Sherlock Holmes comedy, and not including Madagasgar 3. It's not like he hasn't done other stuff before (Taladega Night and Sweeny Todd anyone?) End of one era, start of another.
The Holmes comedy I'm looking forward to. He didn't add anything to Sweeney Todd and was not the reason to pay to see Talladega Nights.
