Second Helping of 'Chance of Meatballs' Trailer
Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 5:04AM
A second trailer for the animated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs has been released, and I've got to say, so far so good on this one. I haven't read the book, so I can't say if it's worth making a movie or perhaps more importantly, if it's worth making this movie.
There are a few family films that are funnier than they are family-oriented. Maybe this falls into that category. I'm led to think that's the design because of the cast, which includes nary a Ray Romano and instead features the of-the-moment talents of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, Andy Samberg, Tracy Morgan, and the timeless James Caan and Mr. T, not to mention the one and only Bruce Campbell.
The animation of the characters doesn't look terribly special, but much like Up, that seems intentional. I watched this new trailer a couple of times, though, and I think the background animation has a really good style. Plus, Mr. T calls a guy a "shenaniganizer."
Chance of Meatballs opens in 3-D and standard format theaters on September 18th.

I bought this book for my son about six months ago and the only similarity between it and this movie is food falling from the sky. The original story was a grandfather telling his grandkids a bedtime story of a town that had peculiar weather where food replaced rain, wind, snow etc. There was no scientist at the root of it and life was fine until the weather went haywire and the people had to flee town.
The film will probably be a bit more entertaining and stand on its own in that it's character driven. Kids who have read the book probably won't care about the change. My son liked the trailers and didn't even think about what had been altered. Was it worth making? I guess that all depends on how well the script was thought out and executed. If it was just based on the book alone I'd say no.
